What is a VPN Protocol?

In computer networking, PPP is often used in conjunction with the Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) to connect computers to the Internet. PPPoE relies on PPP for link configuration and layer 2 data encapsulation.
When used over a phone line, PPP supports multiplexing multiple network protocols over a single physical connection. This allows different types of traffic (e.g., IP, IPv6, NetBEUI, AppleTalk) to be transported over the same link.
PPTP and L2TP are two popular VPN protocols that use PPP for data encapsulation.
